The main system fan is oversized to minimize the impacts of silica dust plugging.

Even airflow and heat distribution are critical. Therefore the heat recovery beds are designed in a multi-layer configuration to prevent silica dust from collecting and clogging in the oxidizer. Should build-up occur, the RTO media accommodates periodic cleaning and potential replacement, if required.

For the carbon fiber - sometimes spelled fibre - industry, we have proprietary designs for furnace and oven emissions that not only address emission abatement but also energy efficiency to keep the cost of fiber production down. Our systems were recognized for these capabilities by the U.S. Federal Government at their Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL) as well as the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom.  Anguil continues to help producers drive down energy consumption and emission output through our participation in The Beacon, an initiative at the forefront of green manufacturing practices for fiber production.     

Carbon fiber and graphite reinforced polymers are materials that have, and will continue to revolutionize the products we use every day by making them stronger, lighter and more durable.  However, the manufacturing process can have serious environmental ramifications and immediate danger to human health if careful consideration is not given to emission control at the production phase of these materials. The pollutants of concern are Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN), Ammonia (NH3), Silicon Dioxide (SiO2) and Nitrous Oxide (NOX). 

As is the case with many industrial manufacturing operations, emissions are best destroyed through the use of thermal oxidation technologies via high temperature combustion.  However, very few industries use custom designed solutions like the carbon fiber processing industry does. Anguil takes it a step further by helping to reduce the manufactured cost of the fiber itself by supplying nearly 20% of the energy required by process ovens and furnaces.  

The design considerations for each of these technologies are described in the animations above and text below:

  • For the higher flow, lower concentration oven exhaust Anguil also manufacturers a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO).  This type of oxidizer is capable of greater than 99%+ destruction efficiency with very low operating costs.  With achievable thermal efficiencies over 97% the RTO is capable of operating with little to no supplemental fuel use.
  • Low and High Temperature (LT / HT) furnaces on carbon fiber processes generate emissions streams heavily concentrated with pollutants.  This makes it an ideal application for the Direct Fired Thermal Oxidizer (DFTO) where high destruction is required but special design considerations should be taken to reduce operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions. 
  • To account for the by-products of combustion, Anguil has designed a specialized Multi-Stage Direct Fired Thermal Oxidizer (MS-DFTO) whereby the nitrogen compounds are disassociated at high temperatures under oxygen depleted conditions.  The remaining gases move into secondary zones where total emission destruction efficiencies are over 99% with minimal NOX generation.

Our integrated systems approach not only includes the oxidation equipment but also dust collection and heat recovery.  With more turnkey systems in the field than any other supplier, we have listened to the maintenance concerns of our customers and designed our abatement systems to increase process up-time.
